How Sedation Can Help You

The team at Green Oakham Dental Care with the practice inhalation sedation machine

It’s normal to feel nervous about the dentist. If anxiety has made appointments difficult, or kept you away altogether, sedation can help you get the treatment you need in comfort. We offer inhalation sedation for children and intravenous sedation for adults at our practice in Oakham.

If a child needs sedation on the NHS they are usually referred to a specialist centre, and that referral can mean waiting up to a year. We are the only practice in Rutland offering inhalation sedation for children in-house, so your child can be treated here, by a team they already know, in weeks rather than months.

Inhalation sedation for children

Breathed in through a small mask, it helps a child feel calm within minutes. They stay awake and aware throughout, and it wears off quickly afterwards.

IV sedation for adults

Given through a small cannula in the arm for deeper relaxation. Most adults remember very little of the treatment itself.

Dental anxiety and phobia

If the thought of an appointment keeps you awake, or has kept you away for years, sedation can make treatment feel manageable again.

A strong gag reflex

Sedation relaxes the reflex that can make impressions, x-rays and work towards the back of the mouth difficult or unpleasant.

Longer or more complex treatment

Implant placement, surgical extractions and full-mouth work are far more comfortable when you are relaxed and the time passes quickly.

No hospital referral needed

Because we provide sedation here at the practice, most patients avoid a referral to a specialist centre and the months of waiting that come with it.

Difficulty getting numb

Some people find local anaesthetic alone doesn’t settle them. Sedation reduces the anxiety that can make numbness harder to achieve.

What is dental sedation?

Sedation uses medication to help you feel calm and relaxed during treatment. It is not a general anaesthetic — you remain conscious and able to respond, but far less aware of what is happening and much more comfortable throughout.
